How Prediction Markets Work
Prediction markets are exchange-traded markets where participants buy and sell contracts tied to the outcome of future events. Each contract pays out $1 if the event occurs and $0 if it doesn't. The current price of a contract represents the market's collective estimate of the probability that the event will happen.
For example, if a contract for "Bitcoin above $100K by December" trades at 65¢, the market is estimating a 65% chance of that happening. If you think the true probability is higher, you buy; if lower, you sell.
Why Prediction Markets Matter
Research has consistently shown that prediction markets outperform traditional forecasting methods like polls, expert panels, and statistical models. This happens because markets aggregate information from thousands of participants, each with their own knowledge and incentives to be accurate.
The financial incentive is key: unlike a poll where there's no cost to being wrong, prediction market participants put real money behind their beliefs. This "skin in the game" filters out noise and surfaces genuine signal.
